PARTNERING FOR A BETTER MOBILITY FUTURE: FIA PRESIDENT AND UNECE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY MEET IN GENEVA

Today, at the UNECE Headquarters in Geneva, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and UNECE Executive Secretary Olga Algayerova met to reassert their joint commitment to build a safer, more sustainable and accessible mobility future, and facilitate cross border travel for motorists.

The meeting was the occasion to discuss the FIA Clubs’ involvement in the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) which offers a unique framework for globally harmonised regulations on vehicles.

On the agenda of the encounter was also the common goal to ease border crossing for motorists. For the International Driving Permits (IDPs), discussions focused on the work carried out as part of the UNECE WP.1 Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety to enhance the UNECE IDP Repository.

FIA President and UNECE Executive Secretary also welcomed the success of the first joint UNECE and FIA high level workshop on Carnets de Passages en Douane (CPDs) organised last June on the occasion of the 160th session of the UNECE Working Party on Customs Questions affecting Transport (WP.30). The workshop brought together contracting parties, interested countries and national associations to discuss the current efforts to advance the digitalisation of the CPDs.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated: “Working hand in hand with UNECE is essential for the FIA to achieve its mission to improve mobility for all road users around the world. With our Members, we are committed to driving progress towards globally harmonised vehicle regulations, as well as modernisation and streamlining of cross border travel documents for motorists. I look forward to strengthening our cooperation with UNECE to reach our common goals.”

UNECE Executive Secretary Olga Algayerova declared: “The digitalisation of the Carnet de Passages en Douane Distribution System will speed up border crossings for millions of automobilists around the globe and prevent false submissions of customs declarations. I look forward to cooperating with President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to further strengthen our excellent cooperation with the FIA on this and other important mobility and road safety issues.”
